If you took in the Yankees-Tigers game on FOX Saturday night, you might have thought you were watching a Justin Verlander infomercial. Every possible positive stat the commentators could come up with was gleefully discussed in detail. They gushed over the Tiger right hander’s 2016 accomplishments. If the same 2 commentators had done Sunday’s game, they might have done the same thing for former Mets prospect Michael Fulmer. The Yankees made both Tiger starters look like Cy Young candidates.
After scoring 33 runs during their five-game winning streak, the Yankees scored just 1 run in each of their last two games. They had 4 hits on Sunday following a 6-hit effort in Saturday night’s loss against Verlander. With 2 straight losses after a five-game win streak, the Yankees fell back under .500 at 31-32.
Both Tanaka and Pineda both pitched well enough to win, but the Yanks failed to support them with their bats. Seem familiar? Yankee fans can only hope that the 5 game win streak was the real deal, and these last 2 games were perhaps just exhaustion from this 40 games in 41 days stretch where they went 23-17. Has the Yankee offense really improved or will the anemic offense that we have seen for most of the season, return? We have the day off to ponder that question. On to Colorado.
