Today is a strange day for me. I remember a cloudless day 15 years ago when the New York skyline, was shattered by the first ever attack on the mainland of the United States. I personally was preparing to head to my office, intending to leave early to attend a mass with my family. It was exactly one year before that my father had passed away. As I was about to leave my home I went to shut off my TV, but the images of tower 2 being hit delayed my departure. Eventually I made it to my office were fellow workers were glued to the TV in fear and confusion as they watched those unforgettable images. I never made it to the church and for a good part of the day, members of my family were unable to get to the church and unable to communicate. It was a terrible day for many reasons. Yet today there is some joy as it’s the first Sunday of the 2016 NFL season. A full day of football and Im sure, controversy.
Unfortunately all eyes will be focused on what happens before the game, as teams gather on the sidelines for the playing of our national anthem. Funny thing is before Colin Kaepernick refused to stand with his teammates, the TV networks were busy making money, not honoring America. Think about it. When was last time you saw the playing of the Star Spangled Banner before an NFL game? Answer…when it suits when it suited the networks. Like before the Super Bowl. Or likely today when the league remembers 9/11. Or before the Thursday night opener, as NBC did with its cameras focused on Denver’s Brandon Marshall kneeling.
You can bet they will today and perhaps for the foreseeable future. How will they recoup the lost cash their accustomed to making while not showing the pregame ceremony? They could follow baseball’s radio broadcasts: The National Anthem is brought to you by…Shameless , isn’t it?
Anyway, today will be full of NFL football and we will be watching. Watching to see what happens before the games and watching our favorite team bring us joy or disappointment. There will be fantasy football, plenty of beer and wings and memories of 9/11. Yes, today will be a strange day.
