Earlier this season, the Yankees lose last night’s game. The bullpen doesn’t keep the other team down, the offense doesn’t muster anything late … we saw lots of that earlier this year. Now? Now the Yankees seem to win games like this on the regular. They found a way to win their fifth straight game Thursday night, this one a 5-4 victory over the Rays.
I can’t believe Im saying this but…Forget the American League’s second wild card. How about this… win three more games against the last-place Rays, and the Yankees could be on the heels of the AL East leader by the end of the weekend. Amazing. The Baby Bombers win again, but that might not have happened because of a balk call.
Reliever Jonathan Holder was called for a balk when he moved his glove, allowing the tying run to score. Joe Girardi convinced the umpires to talk it out, and they determined Holder was simply telling McCann to cycle through the signs again. The balk was overturned. I can’t remember ever seeing a balk call reversed like that.
The balk rule is so damn ambiguous. Half the time it’s called, I’m scratching my head wondering what did the pitcher do wrong. It’s a stupid rule. It’s meant to protect a base runner. That base runner who is looking to steal a base. That’s like telling someone don’t alarm your house, because you can’t deceive the potential burglar. I say: “Get rid of the balk rule” Pitchers should be able to stand on the mound and do whatever the hell they want to do. You wouldn’t have to take a set position. The batter would have to be ready. What the balk rule does is (like) if you had a rule in basketball that you couldn’t have a fast break. If he wants to have a fake double-move, all right. There’s no reason we can’t. We don’t ban fakes anywhere else in the sports world. You can’t say, ‘I’m sorry, you faked that shot, you can’t do that. .As long as he releases the ball with his foot on rubber, it should be all good.
Ok, maybe it’s not that simple. If you eliminated it completely, it might make stealing a base next to impossible, but until there is some consistency from the umpires, until everyone understands what a balk actually is, get rid of it.
WHAT IS THIS?
It's a somewhat tongue in cheek OPINIONATED sports blog that promises to cover baseball, football, hockey, basketball, and any other INTERESTING, stupid, and absurd STORY related to sports.
